Washington, D.C. – El Representante Comercial de Estados Unidos Robert Lighthizer notificó hoy al Congreso que el Presidente Trump tiene la intención de renegociar el Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte (TLCAN). Mediante estas negociaciones, Estados Unidos pretende contribuir a elevar los salarios de los trabajadores estadounidenses y fortalecer el crecimiento de la economía del país mejorando las oportunidades de comercio con Canadá y México.
En la carta al Congreso, el embajador Lighthizer expresó el compromiso de la administración Trump de llevar a término negociaciones con resultados oportunos y significativos para consumidores, empresas, agricultores, ganaderos y trabajadores en general. Se buscará lograr estas metas respetando las prioridades estadounidenses y los objetivos de negociación establecidos por el Congreso en la Ley Bipartidista sobre Prioridades Comerciales y Rendición de Cuentas (Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act, TPA) de 2015. Las negociaciones comenzarán a partir del 16 de agosto de 2017.
“Hoy, el Presidente Trump cumplió una de las promesas centrales que hizo al pueblo estadounidense. Durante años, los políticos han hablado de la necesidad de renegociar este acuerdo, pero el Presidente Trump es el primero en concretar esa promesa”, destacó el embajador Lighthizer. “El Representante Comercial de Estados Unidos seguirá manteniendo consultas con partes interesadas en el Congreso y en Estados Unidos para alcanzar un acuerdo que promueva los intereses de los trabajadores, agricultores, ganaderos y empresarios de nuestro país”.
El Representante Comercial de Estados Unidos publicará un aviso en el Registro Federal instando al público a opinar sobre la orientación, el enfoque y el contenido que deberían tener las negociaciones del Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte.
El presidente Trump anunció el 2 de febrero de 2017 la intención de Estados Unidos de entablar negociaciones relacionadas con el TLCAN. Desde entonces, el Representante Comercial de Estados Unidos ha iniciado consultas con las comisiones pertinentes en el Congreso y con comisiones consultivas, conforme lo estipula la TPA.

USTR: Trump Administration Announces Intent to Renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement
Washington, D.C. – Today, United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer notified Congress that President Trump intends to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Through these negotiations, the United States seeks to support higher-paying jobs in the United States and to grow the U.S. economy by improving U.S. opportunities to trade with Canada and Mexico.
In the letter to Congress, Ambassador Lighthizer expresses the Trump Administration’s commitment to concluding the negotiations with timely and substantive results for U.S. consumers, businesses, farmers, ranchers, and workers. These goals will be pursued consistent with U.S. priorities and the negotiating objectives established by Congress in the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act of 2015 (TPA). Negotiations will begin no earlier than August 16, 2017.
“Today, President Trump fulfilled one of his key promises to the American people. For years, politicians have called for the renegotiation of this agreement, but President Trump is the first to follow through with that promise,” said Ambassador Lighthizer. “USTR will now continue consultations with Congress and American stakeholders to create an agreement that advances the interests of America’s workers, farmers, ranchers, and businesses.”
USTR will publish a notice in the Federal Register requesting public input on the direction, focus, and content of the North American Free Trade Agreement negotiations.
President Trump announced the United States’ intention to engage in negotiations related to NAFTA on February 2, 2017. Since then, USTR has begun consultations with committees of jurisdiction in Congress and advisory committees, as outlined by TPA.
